Learning Objective

Learners will be able to introduce themselves to new people in English in multiple ways.

Having been an ESL Educator for over a decade, I have had the opportunity to observe the various struggles adult learners have had with improving their communication skills. Using the ADDIE model, I created this self-paced eLearning video to increase adult English learners' confidence in introducing themselves to strangers, which is one of the more daunting tasks language learners face.

As this is an animated video, Mayer's Principles of Multimedia Learning were especially considered and applied. A mix of text and images are used, with not too much happening on the screen. The audio aligns with the video throughout the lesson and I recorded the voiceover myself, rather than using a computer/AI-generated voiceover to give the video a more human touch. In keeping with Gagné's Nine Events of Instruction, learners are informed of the objective at the beginning of the video and after being presented with the information, they are given an opportunity to practice.

This lesson is a concept project that would ideally be a part of a course including Teacher feedback. The learning objective addresses factual and conceptual types of knowledge in the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy’s Knowledge Dimension, and the remember, understand, and apply processes within the Cognitive Process Dimension.

As a result of completing this lesson, learners would be able to recognize situations in which they would need to introduce themselves and apply the sentence structures they learned from the lesson with proper pronunciation in a conversation. They should also feel more confident and prepared to start conversations with new people in English.
